Game Title: Sea Of Thieves Developer: Rare Ltd Platform: XBOX one and PC (windows 10) Cost: $59 Game description: Sea of Thieves (SoT) is an open world adventure game. Community: The playerbase of Sea of Thieves is mostly adult players, though there are plenty of kids and teens to be found in game. It is also fairly common to run into women in game as well. Most of the community is generally positive with many playing in their pirate personas. You can find toxic players in game but overall it is not a very common occurrence. Game mechanics: When you load Sea of Thieves you are taken to a ship selection menu. This menu allows you to select from one of the three currently offered ships. The Sloop is a small two person ship with two cannons, it is easy to maneuver and can be sailed solo without much stress to the player. The Brigantine is a two mast, four cannon, three person ship. It is a fast ship, but it's also much harder to sail solo. The Galleon is the largest of the current ships offered. It can take a four person crew, has three masts and eight cannons. Players can select to play with their friends, have the game fill their crew with strangers or opt to play solo. Once you are in game you will be placed in a tavern on one of the outposts. While at the outpost players can stock up their ships with cannon balls, planks (needed to fix your ship) and Bananas (eaten to regain health points ‘HP’). It is recommended to stock up as much as you can before you head out on your adventures. Outposts are also the locations where you can buy quests from the three guilds. The Gold Hoarders will give quests that involve finding buried chests on islands. These quests may be clue based, having players find a named island and follow clues to the chests location, or they can also be map based, having the player find an unnamed island on the ships map, identifying it, and sailing to it to dig up the chests marked on the map. The Order of Souls will give players skull missions. For these you will need to head to the island mentioned in the quest, once you have made it to the island you will be fighting waves of skeletons to earn the skulls of the skeleton captains. The Merchant Guild will give the players lists of items needed and a time frame in which to complete the order. You will collect any cages needed to complete the mission from the the merchant vender that you buy your mission from. Common items listed are pigs, chickens and snakes all have various needs to keep them healthy and alive once captured. The guild will also pay for various other items found in game such as boxes of cannon balls and black powder kegs. There is a new set of challenges coming to this guild with one of the upcoming game patches. Outposts are also the place where you can also pick up vanity items from shop owners, some will sell you new clothes and hair styles. Others can sell you new weapons and tools and the shipwright will sell you vanity items for your ship such as maidenheads, sails and ship marking options. Once you leave the outpost you are free to play the game as you see fit. You may stay focused on the grind towards pirate legend (getting 50 renown in each guild), you may choose to raid skelton forts or you may opt to do in game events such as Bilge Rats challenges or limited time events such as Cursed Sails (ending this week) and Forsaken Shores (starting in September). Or you can just chose to sail and explore the world that Rare has created. In any case always be prepared to face off against the skeletons that roam the world and other pirates that may want to steal your hard earned loot. And don’t forget to keep your eyes out for sharks, the lovely megalodon and the kraken, or else they may take a bite out of you or your ship. Damage to your character can be fixed by eating bananas so always have a few on hand. Damage to the ship can be fixed by nailing planks into place and using your bucket to bail out your ship. Keep in mind that a water logged ship will eventually sink. So what happens if you run out of bananas or planks? Well if our charter dies it heads to the ship of the damned, here you will have to wait a little bit for the doors to open and respawn you onto your ship. If your ship sinks (yes this will happen from time to time) the game will spawn in a new one at a random island on the map, to get to your new ship take a swim to the nearest mermaid, they will kindly see you reunited with your vessel. If you ever fall overboard or get left behind for some reasons the mermaids will be your way back to your ship. In game communication is fairly simple, you will be able to talk to all your crew mates via game chat, and communicating between ships is also possible. For ships that are far enough away from you that they do not pop up in game chat, you must use the speaking trumpet to communicate, which will make your voice carry farther. Players that are close to you will be heard in game chat. There are also a set of programmed words and actions available to the player in the case that the other players you run into don't have a mic setup. This game is changing every few weeks with more in game creatures, ships, events, and lore being added into the game. The developers are great about releasing patch notes and videos about all the new content. It also has a Save The World mode involving zombies. What does this mean? A shooter refers to any game where the main method of dispatching opponents is via gun fire. Third person refers to the vantage point of the player. In a third person game, a players character is visible in its entirety on screen during game play, it's as if the camera is following their character filming them. Battle Royale refers to a type of game. Battle Royale games combine shooter dynamics and those of survival games where one needs to collect resources and supplies. They also feature gradually shrinking maps which force remaining players into a central area. Only one person or team can win a Battle Royale game. Community: The Fortnite community is mixed aged, comprising of many young players, but also a lot of adult players. As it is making the jump into esports this is something that we can expect to stay in place for some time. Considering it is a mixed community with both young and old recreational or competing players, its social components can be mixed. You will occasionally find toxic behavior and communication between players in this game, but overall it still has a fairly friendly player base. Game mechanics: When you load Fortnite, you are taken to your loading screen where players can select play modes (solo, duos and teams of up to 4) as well as pick your skin (what your character looks like). From here players start the game, they can play with closed teams (just their friends) or have the game fill their teams for them (playing with people they do not know). Players will be able to communicate verbally with their teammates during game play. Once a player starts their match they will be taken to an island to wait for the game to be populated with the other players in their match. As soon as this happens all players are placed on the Bus. The “Party Bus” moves across the map, which players can use to tag their desired landing point for teammates to view. Players then choose when to jump from the bus and skydive to their destination of choice, using their glider as they get closer. When they land players must navigate the environment, collecting materials (also called mats) such as wood, stone, and metal by using their pickaxe. Pretty much all objects, plants, and buildings on the map can be broken down for mats. Players must also explore to find weapons, shield potions, medical supplies, ammunition and other ingame items (like llamas). All the while they will be on the lookout for opponents to eliminate and to defend themselves from. On top of this they will need to keep an eye on the ever shrinking map. As the map shrinks “the storm” (area outside of the circle or “eye”) will take health points from any player who has yet to move within the boundaries of the circle. The game is over when only one player or team remains. Games average about 20 minutes in length from start to finish and can not be paused. In app purchases: This game can be played for FREE, with Save The World mode (zombies) being a paid add on. Where Fortnite makes its money though is in its cosmetics and battle pass sales. Every few days new skins (what your character wears and looks like), Bling (what goes on a charters back), emotes (how a character can move or dance) are added to the shop. These all cost “V bucks”, which one purchases with real money. Battle passes allow you to access a whole second set of rewards for accomplishments in game, and gives you additional quests you can complete for rewards. Battle passes must be re-purchased every season, with each season running around 70 days. At the end of each season, both your battle pass and your level status are reset. It is estimated that Epic (the game developer) has made at least 1 billion in revenue from in game sales in the first year of the game, as players seek to customize and upgrade their character. Revenue Potential: As more and more people begin to play Fortnite and as is makes its way into the esport arena, some players are beginning to make their living from playing the game. From fortnite themed Youtube Channels to streaming on Twitch or even entering small amature competitions, many people are finding Fortnite to be a lucrative career option. Common fortnite related youtubers or streamers you may hear of go by the names of Ninja, Myth, and Shroud. 2018 PLA Gaming For Education Content: Amax VTK, Chocmoojoo. Editing: Wiztch |
